Mmm. Starr took another bite of her mother’s pumpkin bread. The added nuts and pumpkin seeds made her want to wiggle with happiness.

“I take it New York doesn’t have pumpkin bread.” Amusement laced Mom’s words.

“Sure they do. Just not as good as yours.”

Mom beamed. “I’ve missed you.”

“I missed you too, Mom.” Over two weeks of being home had changed Starr’s original attitude about coming to DC. No, she hadn’t found another job yet, and she hadn’t submitted any of her applications she’d begun to fill out for jobs in DC, but she also didn’t feel so blue about being jobless. Being at home and surrounded with family—maybe minus Angel—had relaxed Starr. Waylon also had done a lot to bring a smile to her face.

Why hadn’t she done a better job at keeping in touch with her mom? Her brothers and sisters? In the beginning, Starr had assured herself they wouldn’t miss her. They all had careers of their own, and the lack of calls and texts seemed to affirm that belief. Now Starr could admit that keeping in touch went both ways. I’ll do better from now on.

“Are you going out with Waylon again?” her mom asked slyly.

“I am.” The thought of him had her lips itching to curve in a smile, but the way her mom watched like a hawk had Starr biting another piece of bread instead.

“He’s a good boy.”

“Pretty sure he’s too old to be called a boy.”

Mom placed a hand on her hip. “Considering I remember him as a boy, that’s what he’ll always be to me.”

Starr shook her head. Her mom liked to remind all of her siblings that no matter how old they were, they would always be her babies. Guess that applied to Waylon too. Starr finished off her pumpkin loaf and reached for her coffee.

The sound of footsteps caught Starr’s attention, and Angel’s frame appeared in the kitchen doorway. “Morning, everyone.”

“Morning,” Starr and her mom replied in unison.

Lord God, please take these hostile feelings away. Help me forgive her.

“Oh, you made your pumpkin loaf, Mom?”

“I sure did.”

“Don’t you know I can’t eat fattening stuff right now?” Angel’s nose scrunched up. “Surely you have some fruit or something healthy?”

Starr rolled her eyes and sipped her coffee. If Angel was going to bring her drama with her, Starr would need all the caffeine in the house to keep her mouth shut.

“How about an egg-white omelet, sweetie?”

“Perfect.” The look on Angel’s face made Starr think of a peacock spreading its feathers. Her sister took the barstool next to her at the kitchen island. “So, Starr.”

“Yes?” Was it the coffee or Holy Spirit’s help keeping annoyance from covering her words?

“About the whole bridesmaid incident.”

Out of the corner of her eye, Starr saw her mom perk up. Dread pooled in her stomach.

“They found another gown like the one you tried on.”

“Oh yeah?” Lord, help. Her breathing grew shallow as the implication sank in.

“Which means you can be my maid of honor again. Now I’ll have three.” Angel clapped her hands, as though life was suddenly perfect.
